Houldsworth Hall - University of Manchester

Victoria Park campus, Hulme Hall is home to over 400 students and as such is the biggest hall in the area. It is made up of 6 blocks the oldest of which, Houldsworth, was built in 1907 and is Grade II listed. Unlike many of the other buildings in its immediate vicinity, Houldsworth Hall is more typical of Edwardian architecture.

Over the course of a year-long programme, Armitage refurbished several hundred windows across nine elevations. The scheme involved refurbishing timber frames and metal opening casements in an attempt to restore the aesthetic appeal and structural longevity of the windows. All work was carried out in a live environment which involved working closely with the University staff and students to ensure minimal disruption to the day to day running of the building and the students studies.

As much of the existing fabric of the windows, where possible, had to be retained to ensure the original charm of the building is evident and remains in an uncompromised state. The demands governed by the listed status of the building allowed us to showcase our attention to detail and ability to sympathise with the building’s valued heritage.
