Christ Church - Eccleston

Christ Church, situated on Church Lane, Eccleston was built in 1838 and sits at the northern end of a large graveyard.

Christ Church, a grade II listed building, once sat at the heart of a small village but it is now surrounded by post 1960's housing. The project consisted of the church reordering works primarily to provide both modernised facilities better suited to the local communities requirements, whilst also improving the churches DDA compliance with current legislation. To achieve these objectives the works required the temporary removal of box pews to enable the existing floor level to be raised and once a new underfloor heating system had been installed the floor was recovered with a new engineered oak floor, produced and installed by specialist flooring contractor Chaunceys FFS Ltd. In addition a new disabled WC with baby change facilities has been constructed and segregated from the main church Nave by the installation of a new frameless glazed screen complete with solid oak surround this has also assisted in creating a multifunctional meeting and activities space in the west gallery.

Whilst completing the works several interesting and unusual operations were required, which included the relocation of the existing baptism font. This was dismantled, relocated and reassembled to a new location within the church. The existing stained glass window, originally bequeathed to the church by a parishioner, has been removed, refurbished and relocated in the West tower entrance porch. During the process of reinstalling the church pews a new modern ‘kitchenette’ area has been created in solid oak and carefully concealed behind the existing pew division walls within the North Transept.

Owing to the time constraints of a pre-arranged wedding works were accelerated throughout the summer to ensure the special occasion was not unduly affected by the re-ordering works and all parties concerned have commented on the satisfaction of the level of workmanship and professional approach in ensuring the completion date was achieved.
