Saddleworth Museum & Art Gallery

Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1962 and is situated in one of the out buildings of the 19th century Victoria Mill.

The "Into the Future" project which was approved by the Heritage Lottery Fund Organisation comprised of a two storey front extension to increase the exhibition space as well as creating a strong presence in the town. The extension on the front has taken the building back to its original position on the edge of High Street.

A single storey side extension has improved the entrance space and created a new reception and retail areas. Internal alterations now provide a lift to the existing former mill buildings, giving the building full disabled access.

The Museum and Art Gallery has been fully refurbished and the existing roof has been insulated and the trusses sanded and treated. New double glazed timber windows with a sun cool glass system were installed to match the profile of the old decayed windows.

The new retail area and reception have been moved from their original positions and are now housed together on a raised area overlooking the exhibition spaces. Purpose made display units, fitted shelving and mobile storage boxes have been installed by specialists. A matching staircase has been introduced for easy access to the first floor galleries and exhibition areas; this stands side by side with the modern glazed balustrading that surrounds the atrium overlooking the Dobcross Loom and the High Street.

"It is rare these days to find a contractor that is so proactive in overcoming problems and so committed and capable in relation to achieving the desired level of construction quality.

Armitage exemplify these attributes and we have found them to be cooperative, honourable and a real pleasure to work with. The site staff and management team on the above project were friendly and diligent and the head office set up provided a professional support system"
