Jodrell Bank

Following a rigorous selection process we were delighted to have been awarded the construction works on the Grade I Listed Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, as part of our Contractor Framework for the University of Manchester.

We were engaged as Principal Contractor to work on the Jodrell Bank Lovell Telescope, to execute the replacement of passenger/goods lifts (2 no), over a period of 16 weeks, allowing for the Telescope to remain operational whilst in collaboration with other telescopes throughout Europe.

The works included the replacement of the Red and Green Tower lift cars and the replacement of all existing electrical supply units connected with the new cars. The project also included works to the supply tunnel from the control room to the telescope base, this required the complete replacement of the Fire Detection System and the installation of a significant quantity of new plant room equipment. This unique project was completed with co-operation from the Clients Team including the valued input from Jodrell Bank members of staff.

The Lovell Telescope was the largest steerable dish radio telescope in the world, 76.2 meters (250 feet) in diameter, when completed in 1957. It is now the third largest, with the capacity for many more years of service.
