Armitage were appointed as main contractor to develop a new café and outdoor performance space at Market Place in Prescot.
The MATE Creative Bistro and Piazza, which formed part of a £600,000 transformation of the site through Knowsley Council and Heritage Lottery funded Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) opened in 2019 and has brought the Market Place back as the thriving heartbeat of the town through events including comedy, poetry and film nights, an open-air cinema and pop-up performances.
The works comprised of a single storey, granite clad, bistro / pizza kitchen to compliment the outdoor performance area. Many of the existing materials present on the site such as York stone paving and Jacobean bricks were retained for use in the development and has created a real community space for generations to come.
“We’re proud to have been involved in the regeneration of Prescot, bringing Market Place back to use as a performing arts venue in recognition of its diverse historical associations such as the Earls of Derby, King’s College Cambridge, Edward Lear and even the Bard – William Shakespeare. A project for future generations to enjoy.”
